Fantasy Outlook: Aaron Rodgers Is On My Undraftable List
Hello fantasy world. Hello America. Hey there Australia.
On a drive through beautiful Northeast Ohio a few weeks back I was listening to the Dantasy Football podcast and the episode was about the biggest fantasy fallers from the offseason. Aaron Rodgers obviously came up since his franchise used two of their draft picks on a corroded penny and a box of reduced fat white cheddar Cheez-Its.
Still, the case was made that Aaron Rodgers was actually a buy in fantasy because this will motivate him and he’ll set the world on fire. I understand that argument, and I think many people will take that side of it.
The only problem is he’s 36 years old playing in a run-heavy offense with Allen Lazard looking like he’ll be the number two WR. I’ve personally been bearish on the Packers since late 2018, and I’m still not buying any single tiny fragment of Rodgers hype.
Over on Drafters, Rodgers is being drafted as the QB10 in best ball, and that’s still too steep for me. In fact, I have Rodgers down in the 20s in my rankings.
That’s not to say Rodgers going nuts and scissor kicking his way to a top 10ish fantasy finish at QB is completely out of the realm of possibilities here, but given his age, offense, and recent performance, this isn’t where I’m taking a shot. I would much rather wait and take a shot on some of the QBs going later in drafts, like division rival Matt Stafford, Ben Roethlisberger, or even Teddy Bridgewater (Carolina’s D could be terrible and that would equal lots of garbage time for Ted).
So despite some likely positive touchdown and passing volume regression for the 2020 season, and a nice opening schedule, to me this ship has sailed and the upside just isn’t there given the offense and lack of weapons. I won’t be taking a single share of Rodgers personally.
